Historical information
The oldest name of Makrinitsa was "Matnitsa". It is one of the oldest villages of Serres, a large village. During the Turkish occupation, Makrinitsa was inhabited by half Turks from the southern side of the village (from the "Children's House" downwards) and half Greeks, as well as some Bulgarian families from the northern side of the village (from the "Children's House" upwards), with a total population of close to 600 people. With the Treaty of Neuilly, the Exarchs fled to Bulgaria and with the Treaty of Lausanne, the Muslims fled to Turkey, while Pontians and North Thracians joined the local population in the village.[1] The village was rebuilt and experienced economic prosperity with agriculture and livestock farming until the mid-1960s, when emigration began abroad, mainly to Germany and Sweden, but also domestically to Athens and Thessaloniki.
