Lykoudi (Λυκούδιον) Larissa

Lykoudi is a village in the municipality of Elassona, Larissa prefecture. According to the 2011 census, it has 298 residents. The village is built at an altitude of 410 meters.[1] It is 14 kilometers from Elassona, to the north. Its residents are engaged in agriculture, specifically the cultivation of grain and tobacco, and livestock, with free-range sheep and goats.[2][3]

Historical information

Lykoudi has been identified and mentioned in a store of 1506. This village was located in Bitseria and its residents settled on the site of the current village in the 18th century. In 1874, a school began to operate in Lykoudi. In 1912, after the Battle of Sarantaporos, the area became part of Greece.[3] During the occupation, the village was the headquarters of resistance and British brigades and was thus burned down in 1943 by the occupying forces.[2] The population of the village began to decline after the 1960s.

Lykoudi was designated the headquarters of the homonymous community in 1919. The community was maintained until 1997, when it was annexed to the municipality of Sarantaporou with the Kapodistrias program and in 2010 it was annexed to the municipality of Elassona.[4]

The churches of Agia Paraskevi and Agios Georgios have been designated as historically preserved monuments. The church of Agia Paraskevi is a three-aisled basilica with a gabled roof, which bears cuts on the eastern and western sides. It dates back to the end of the 18th century. A part of the old iconostasis and its altarpiece have been preserved in the church. There is a bell tower to the northeast of the church.[5] The church of Agios Georgios is located just outside the village and was built in the early 20th century. It is a single-aisled basilica with a semicircular niche on the eastern side. Inside, the original iconostasis of the church is preserved, along with 15 icons of the iconostasis and a despotic icon, which date back to the first half of the 19th century.[6]

The village also preserves the Tsar's fountain, which was built at the end of the 18th century. The fountain was a donation from the klephtarmatolos Panos Tsaras, father of Nikotsaras, who stayed in the area for ten days. Some of the traditional stone-built buildings of the area are also preserved in the village.[2]
