Loutros (Λουτρός) Imathia

Loutros is a settlement in Central Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Imathia.[1][2]

Geographical - Historical information

Loutros is located in the Aliakmonas plain, near the northern banks of the river and at an altitude of 18 meters.[1] It is approximately 7 km. SW. from Alexandreia (seat of the municipality) and 55 km. W. from Thessaloniki (via Egnatia Odos). To the north of the village is the Loutro railway station where the Thessaloniki - Florina railway line passes, while to the south end is the Egnatia Odos. The parish church is the church of Saints Constantine and Helen (western end).[3] South of the village, in a cluster of trees, is the female Monastery of Agia Kyriaki.[4]

Loutros is mentioned from the period of Turkish rule and was located southeast of the lake-marsh of Giannitsa, which was drained in 1932-1936, while historically it is included in the villages of the Roumlouki region.[5] It was part of the kaza of Thessaloniki of the then Ottoman Empire. Alexander Sinve (in the book "Les Grecs de l' Empire Ottoman. Etude Statistique et Ethnographique") in 1878 wrote that 276 Greeks lived in Loutro of the Diocese of Campania.[6]

Administrative - Population data

After the Balkan Wars and the liberation of Macedonia, it is officially mentioned in 1918 as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[7] According to the "Kallikratis" Program and its amendment by Kleisthenis I, together with the Exokklisi, they constitute the community of Loutro[8] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Alexandria of the Municipality of Alexandreia, while according to the 2011 census, 1,277 residents were registered.[9]

The population censuses after World War II are:
Census 1951 1961 1971 1981 1991 2001 2011
Population 987[10] 1,175[11] 1,253[12] 1,234[13] 1,286[14] 1,294[15] 1,227
