Livadochori (Λιβαδοχώριον) Trikala

Livadochori (formerly known as Gionthi) is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Trikala, with 5 permanent residents (2011 census).[1] It is built at an altitude of 1,100 meters[2] on the slopes of southern Pindos and is one of the most mountainous settlements of the Pyli Mountain Range. Administratively, it falls under the Pindea municipal unit of the Pyli municipality of the Trikala regional unit. The local community of Livadochori extends over approximately 11 sq km (2001-2011 census).[2][3]

The residents of Livadochori are mainly engaged in livestock farming and agriculture (horticulture for private use). In Livadochori, during the summer months, the residents also harvest oregano, a plant that is a trademark of Livadohori and the surrounding mountain villages. Livadochori also has a view of the mountains: "Avgo", "Ornio", "Kerasoula", "Trambala" and others. Mount Avgo is the 32nd highest mountain in Greece with an altitude of 2,148 meters. It is only about 2.5 hours on foot from the village and at its peak one can collect tea, bitouni (a slightly more bitter type of tea), nanes (a herbal type of vlitus) and many others.[4].

Administrative changes

In 1883, the settlement, then called Gionthi and with a population of 56, was annexed to the municipality of Kothonia, with the seat in the settlement of Vitsista (present-day Mesochora).[5]

In 1927, the settlement of Gionthi was separated from the community of Balkanos and designated as the seat of the community of Gionthi. The settlements of Vardari (present-day Parameron) and Vathyrreuma were also annexed to the new community.[8][9]
In 1927, the settlement and the community of Gionthi were renamed Livadohori.[10]
