Leptokarya (Λεπτοκαρυά) Thesprotia

Leptokarya is a village in Thesprotia Prefecture in Epirus and the southeastern tip of Filiates Province. Together with 42 settlements in the area and the former Filiates municipality under the Kapodistrias Plan, they form the new Filiates municipality unit. The neighboring village of Brania also belongs to Leptokarya as a settlement. Ecclesiastically it belongs to the diocese of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga and educationally to the region of the Filiates.

Geography

It is 3 km from the national road Ioannina - Igoumenitsa at the height of Vrosina and 45 km from Ioannina.

The wider horizon of the village and area is painted north of Murgana, west of Mount Velouna, the Prophet Elias Malouniou and Vlachoritiko, south of Mount Souli, east of Olytsikas, Mount Kalochori, the mountain range of Pindia and Mount Kas Nemertzika.

Houses

The village has 130 houses today (2008), 42 of which are open all year round, as its permanent residents live there. 24 belong mainly to pensioners who live in the village for most of the year, 41 are open at least continuously 2 to 3 times a year, 19 less often and 2 are somehow abandoned and in a state in which they cannot live.

Population occupations

In 1928 the village had 299 inhabitants, while in the year (2008) 115 people were members of 45 families, a fact that nevertheless ranks the village according to the actual population in the first three largest villages in the Filiates Province. Of the permanent residents, 20 are younger than 20 years old, 50 are between 20 and 60 years old and the remaining 45 are older than 60 years.

In the village there is a two-seat primary school with 13 children, 7 from the village and the rest from the neighboring villages as well as a kindergarten with three children from the village.

Agia Marina is the central church of the village while there are also three chapels, Agia Varvara, Agios Savvas and Agios Nikolaos.

The village has a complete network of paved roads that was built at the expense of the Leptocarites and supplies all the houses in the village.

Community organization

Leptokarya has a three-person community council. The President of the Parish Council (2009) is Vangelis Nikolaidis and the Parish community are Anna Bitsa and George Tsetsis.

Since 1993 there has been a cultural association in the village, which deals with the organization of events, the implementation of landscape works, the implementation of excursions, etc.
