Lefkadia (Λευκάδια) Imathia
Lefkadia is a settlement in Central Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Imathia.[1]
Geographical - Historical information
Lefkadia is located at the northeastern foothills of Mount Vermio at an altitude of 90 meters. It is approximately 9 km. NE. from Naoussa (seat of the municipality) and 88 km. W. from Thessaloniki (via Giannitsa). To the east is Chariessa, to the north is Episkopi and to the south is Kopanos. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture while there are also craftsmen, freelancers, merchants and public and private sector employees. The patron saint is the church of Agia Paraskevi.
South of the village, towards Kopanos, lies the archaeological site of the ancient Macedonian city of Mieza[2], while to the east, in 1877, the Danish archaeologist Carl Kinh discovered the Macedonian "Tomb of Crisis". In 1942, Charalambos Makaronas discovered, to the west, the tombs of Lisonas and Callicles, while in 1971, Catherine Romiopopou opened the "Tomb of Anthemion" to the west.
Administrative - Population data
It is officially mentioned, after the Balkan Wars and the liberation of Macedonia, in 1918 in the Government Gazette 152A - 09/07/1918, with the name from the Turkish occupation as Golesiani, being annexed to the then community of Sermorinovo (today's Marina). In 1926, with the Government Gazette 97A - 18/03/1926, it was renamed Lefkadia.[3] According to the "Kallikratis" Program and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, it constitutes the community of Lefkadia[4] which falls under the municipal unit of Anthemia of the Municipality of Heroic City of Naoussa, while according to the 2011 census, 1,021 residents were registered.[5]
