Regional unit : Messinia

  • Lantzounato (Λαντζουνάτον) Messinia
  • Lantzounato or Latzounato [4], officially referred to as Landzunaton and formerly as Landsunaton, is a mountainous settlement near Raptopoulos and is administratively part of the Municipality of Trifylia, in the Prefecture of Messinia.

    Location

Lantzounato is located about 28 km southeast of Kyparissia. It is the last village to the south of the area of Tripili, on the route after the villages of Sellas, Andyros and Kalogeresi, from which it is about 8.5 km, 5 km and 4 km respectively. Lanzunato is about 16 km from Raptopoulos. After Landzunato, the route continues to the village of Paleokastro (belongs to the municipal unit of Trikorfo of the Municipality of Messina), from which it is about 4.5 km away. Lantzounato is 651 [1] [5] meters high and is about 28 kilometers off the coast of the Ionian Sea.

    History

The area of the settlement, in antiquity, was part of the kingdom of Nestor, the ancient Pylos. The village itself has a long history that follows the history of Trifylia and the wider area of Tripili. During the Venetian occupation it was referred to as Lanzonatu. The settlement is also mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which took place during the thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. Lantzounato (Lanzonatu), in 1689, belonged to the province of Arcadia (or Arcadia, ie the area of present-day Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces in which the district of Methoni (Fanari province, Arcadia province) was then divided. , Navarino province and Methoni province). [6] Lantzonato was referred to as Lassonatu in the Grimani census of 1700. [7] The village was also referred to in the 19th century as Lauzunatou according to Pouqueville in 1815 and Landzonato according to the 1829 census, made by the "Mission scientifique de Morée", which was part of the French mission with The Expédition de Morée was an expeditionary mission of 13,000-15,000 men, led by Nicholas-Joseph Maizonos in the Peloponnese between 1828 and 1833. [7] There are also reports of the village as Lantsanatou or as Latzonatou. Lantsounaton was annexed to the old Municipality of Tripoli in 1835. [8] [9] The village is also mentioned, in 1853, also as Latsounatou in the second volume of "Ellinika" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis and as a village of the Municipality of Tripili of the Province of Trifylia with a population of 108 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [10] At least from 1879 to 1907 the village was officially referred to as Lanzonatou. In 1899 he was transferred from the Prefecture of Messinia and belonged to the Prefecture of Trifylia, [11] for about a decade, until 1909, when he returned to the Prefecture of Messinia, [12] as a settlement of the Province of Trifylia. In 1907 the village was officially referred to as Lanzholaton.

In 1912 the official name of the village became Lantzounaton or Lantzola and it was annexed to the homonymous Community of Lantzounato or Lantzounato with the same seat. [13] [14] Just a year later, in 1913, [15] the official name of the settlement and community was corrected to Landzunaton and the Landzunatu Community respectively. Lantzounato remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1912 to 1997, when, as part of changes to local government through the Kapodistrias plan, it became part of the abolished Triphyla Community, [16] [17] until 2010. The community of Tripila was officially renamed, in 2006, to the Community of Tripili [18] and was abolished at the end of 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Lantzounato now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia. [19] [4 ] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargaliana, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the community of Tripyla. Today, Lantzounato is the only settlement and seat in the Local Community of Lantzounato of the Municipality of Trifylia. [4]

    Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 23 permanent residents, who are employed in animal husbandry, as well as in various agricultural work. [4]

Paleokastro Castle in Landzunato [dead link]
"We announce that Paleokastro, located in the community of Landzounatou in the province of Trifylia in the prefecture of Messinia, is an ancient monument with an surrounding area of 500m. around him. The Castle spans two levels, the second of which, the inner courtyard, which survives in better condition, is a four-sided plan with four rectangular towers. It is built with mudstone without the intervention of bricks. Inside, a vaulted long building is preserved, probably sometimes two-story. The outer precinct of the castle has collapsed for the most part. In general, Paleokastro bears many similarities with the Castle of Mila, and it seems that it was an observation post - a checkpoint that controlled the passage from Kyparissia. A. Bon mentions it with the name Saflauro, Samflauro, and identifies it with the Castle of Soulaouros, which is included in the territories which were handed over to Konstantinos Paleologos in 1428.
