Laimos (Λαιμός ) Florina
Laimos (formerly known as Rampi [1]) is a mountainous settlement and the seat of the Municipality of Prespes in the Regional Unit of Florina. It is built on the western slopes of Varnountas (Peristeri) at an altitude of 900 m. It is 50 km from Florina and 60 km from Kastoria.
Historical information
The oldest name of the village was Rampi or Saouftsi. During the Ottoman occupation, Laimos was inhabited mainly by Greeks, but also by some Muslim Albanians. Despite the establishment of the Bulgarian exarchate in 1870, the Christian inhabitants of Chersos remained loyal to the Patriarchate of Constantinople. A Greek school was already operating since the late 19th century. In 1903, with the Ilinden Uprising, many houses were destroyed by the komitadzis and the Ottoman army. On August 3 of the same year, a group of komitadzis murdered the local Greek priest Spyros Papanaum and his 17-year-old grandson. Subsequently, many residents were forced to join the Bulgarian Exarchate. During the Macedonian Struggle, many residents participated, most notably the chieftain Spyros Paraskevaides. After the liberation of 1912, the Muslim residents fled to Turkey and in their place were settled 27 families from the Pontic Caucasus as well as 6 families from the villages ceded to Albania, west of the Great Prespa. During the Greek Civil War, from December 1947, the General Headquarters Officers' School (SAG) of the partisan Democratic Army of Greece operated in Laimos. There, between the Laimos - Ag. Germanos areas, on the slopes of the mountain, the School's exercises were held. After the end of the civil war, 44 families fled to Yugoslavia while 43 families fled to Eastern European countries. After this, the state, in order to strengthen the population, settled 20 Vlach families from Epirus.[2][3]
Geography
Laimos is built on the western slopes of Varnountas (Peristeri) in a prominent position with an excellent view of the Prespes. It is located next to the border with North Macedonia. Until the 1960s, it was the commercial center of the region, as there was a border connection with Yugoslavia. The village is crossed by the Paliorema River, 10 kilometers long, which flows into the Great Prespa. There are 3 bridges of the Paliorema River within the Gorge. Its waters are home to endemic trout, while for the needs of reproduction, it is visited every May for a month by skubouzia (Chondrostoma vardarensis) and brianes (Barbus barbus) from the Great Prespa.[2][3]
Today
The residents are engaged in the farming (activity) of the famous Prespes beans, livestock farming, fishing and tourism. Among the sights of Laimos are the hill of Agios Ioannis with its excellent view and sunset, the church of the same name, as well as the churches of Agia Paraskevi of 1896 and Ypapanti tou Kyriou (15th century). Most of the houses are built of bricks and stones. There are many watermills along the Paliorema River.
Laimos has a Municipal Library and a Folklore Collection with objects from the Prespa region. On the 4th day of Easter, a festival is held on the hill of Agios Ioannis.[2][3]
