Kryopigi (Κρυοπηγή) Preveza
Kryopigi is a settlement in Epirus in the Regional Unit of Preveza.[1][2]
General information
Kryopigi is located on the slopes of the Zalongos Mountains at an altitude of 490 meters[2] at a distance of approximately 31 km. N.-NW. from Preveza and falls under the municipality of Preveza, as formed in 2011 with the "Kallikratis" program.[3] According to the 2011 census, 135 residents[4] were registered, who are engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. The area is the most mountainous part of the municipality with natural beauty and is also located at the foot of Zalongos, just two kilometers away from the Monastery of Agios Dimitrios Zalongos. The climate is continental with relatively cold winters with little sunshine due to its location. It has several springs inside and outside the village, which is probably where it got its name.
Renaming
The old name of the village was Douvgaina or Douviana. In 1927 it was renamed Kriopigi.[3]
Historical information
According to testimonies, Kryopigi is likely to have been founded around 1800. The first inhabitants settled in the location "Manari", but soon moved to the foothills of Zalongos, due to the many snakes and scorpions.
The resistance action of the people of Kryopigi in the Greco-German war was great, but at a great price. In 1944, the Germans, behind the church of Agia Triada in Agrinio, executed 23 people of Kryopigi in cold blood on Good Friday.[5] Today, in the village square, there is a monument dedicated to the memory of the fallen. The Martyrical Village of Kryopigi, Preveza was recognized by the competent Committee of the Ministry of Interior on August 2, 2019.
