History

Approximately two and a half kilometers west of Kryopigi, at the mountainous location "Paliokastro", traces of a Roman settlement have been identified, based on surface pottery, which administratively belonged to the Roman colony of Kassandria.[1] The old name of the village until the 20th century was Pazarakia. The current settlement is located on the site of settlements of ancient times. Specifically, it lies between the ancient cities of Neapolis and Phlegra. During the Turkish occupation, like all the other villages of the peninsula, it was subject to the tax authority of Gazanfer Aga, while administratively it belonged to the nahiye of Kalamaria[2]. During the revolution of 1821, the residents of Kriopigi contributed to the struggle. Important figures of the fighters were the chieftains Stamos Hapsas and the brothers Ioannis and Anastasios Chimeftos[3]. Kriopigi is the headquarters of the Pedagogical Training Center, founded by the Ziegler couple. Seminars are organized by educators at this center.

In 2006, the village was threatened by[4] fire.
