Kritharia (Κριθαριά) Magnisia
Kritharia is a seaside settlement of Nea Anchialos in Thessaly and the Regional Unit of Magnesia.[1]
Geographical - historical data
Kritharia is located on the northern coast of the Pagasitic Gulf with an altitude of 5 meters.[2] It is approximately 11 km. S.-SW. from Volos and 9 km. E.-NE. from Nea Anchialos while the Karditsa - Volos National Road passes to the north and Marathos is to the southwest. It is known in the area for its beach protected from the winds and is a holiday destination in the area.[3]
To the northeast of the village on the hill "Soro" an ancient settlement has been identified that is likely to be the ancient Amphanes with a founding date around the 6th century. BC. Its walls are circular with large, almost unworked slabs, while gates of the walls, an ancient road, parts of buildings and outside the walls, a temple dedicated to Apollo have been discovered. Votive offerings (a relief marble votive stele, inscribed pedestals and colonnades, marble statues of sacred children) have been found, as well as a marble lion from the settlement's cemetery.[4]
The settlement began to develop in the mid-1970s and even more rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s. Until the development of the settlement, very few fishermen lived in the area. Today it is one of the tourist resorts of the Pagasitic Gulf, although it also has a significant number of permanent residents. The central church is dedicated to Agios Apostolos the New, who is also the patron saint of the village. The village also has a cultural association
Administrative information
It is officially mentioned as a separate settlement, for the first time in 1981, being listed in the community of Nea Anchialos.[5] According to the Kallikratis program, together with Nea Anchialos, Agios Georgios, Velanidia, Dimitriada and Marathos, it forms the Community of Nea Anchialos, which falls under the Municipal Unit of Nea Anchialos of the Municipality of Volos and according to the 2011 census has 311 residents.[6]
