Krios is a settlement in the Evros Regional Unit in Thrace.
History

Greek refugees from Ortakçı in Edirne came to Krios. Thus, while Ortakçı in 1877 had 450 inhabitants, in 1922 it reached approximately 1,000 inhabitants. However, the fate and destiny of its inhabitants were linked to that of Asia Minor and the Catastrophe of Smyrna. In October 1922, the inhabitants were forced to abandon their homeland and be divided into four villages, Mesokomi in Serres, Mesochori in Komotini, Valto and Krios in Evros.

The settlement of Krios previously existed under the Turkish name Kujunli, which means in Turkish a pasture for goats and sheep or some related concept to sheep, hence Krios. In the 1922 census by the Turkish administration, the village had 64 residents, all of them Muslims, and no Christians are mentioned.

When the residents came from Ortaktsi and settled there in 1923, they tried to give new life and perspective to the place. The choice of settlement was made based on the rich soils of the area and the many water sources that existed – ten in number. Even today (2010), residents of the wider area come and supply themselves with drinking water.

With the censuses carried out in different periods, the demographic evolution of the village's inhabitants was as follows: In 1928 the inhabitants amounted to 161, in 1940 to 221, in 1951 to 193, in 1961 to 261[1], in 1971 to 199[2], in 1981 to 117[3], in 1991 to 113[4], in 2001 to 53[5] and in 2011 to 40 inhabitants[6].

The number of residents was mainly influenced by external migration to the countries of Central Europe, the then West Germany, Switzerland and Austria, but also by internal movement, to Dikaia, Orestiada, but also to the cities of Alexandroupolis and Thessaloniki.

Churches

The first church of Krios was dedicated, like the one in Ortaktsi, to Saint George and the one built later, commemorates the Saints Anargyroi, Kosmas and Damian.

Their memory is honored on July 1 and November 1, when the village church also celebrates.
