Kremastos (Κρεμαστός) Evoia

Kremastos is a village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 153 residents. It is built at an altitude of 250 meters.[2] The village's economy is agricultural, with olive oil, vegetables, grains, walnuts and almonds as its main products. There are two cafes and a tavern in the village.[3]

Historical information

The village was founded in the post-Byzantine years by residents of the villages of Trachili and Gaia. According to tradition, the Turks threw their unwanted prisoners into a steep rocky ravine west of the village, and the place was named Turkokazano.[3] In 1835, Kremastos was annexed to the municipality of Konistria. With the abolition of municipalities in 1912, it was designated as a community seat. With the Kapodistrias plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Konistros and with the Kallikratis plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri.[3][4]

Points of interest

The village has the church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, which celebrates its feast day on August 29. Also in the village is the covered fountain of Kalias. In the past it was used for washing clothes. Near the village is also the now abandoned monastery of Klivanos, which was dedicated to the Zoodochos Pigi. The stone cells of the monks and the catholicon of the monastery are still preserved. There are water springs in the area.[3]
