Kouvouklia, Kozani

Kouvouklia is a small refugee settlement located halfway between the village of Messiani and the village of Roditis in the Prefecture of Kozani. It took its name from the town of Kouvouklia, which was located fifteen kilometers from Prousa. Metropolitan Dionysios of Servia and Kozani wrote about the settlement in question: “Those Kouvouklia who came to Kozani settled there and with the enthusiasm of faith and piety and with the assistance of the other Kouvouklia who are in Greece and all Christians, they built the church of Saint Varadatos on the banks of Lake Aliakmonas, near the large bridge. It is therefore within the Orthodox faith and tradition that here in our land the Christians set out to build the church of Saint Varadatos and to begin to solemnly celebrate his memory again. We cannot fail to appreciate and praise this effort of the few Kouvoukliotes of Kozani. With this piety the Greeks of Asia Minor and Pontus, laden with the icons and sacred vessels of their churches, came here and rebuilt their lives. All the names of the cities and villages, all the customs and traditions of the people, the entire Greek and Christian culture of many centuries, all were transplanted from Asia Minor and Pontus and live here again”[1].
