Kolokynthou (Κολοκυνθού) Kastoria

Kolokynthou is a settlement of the Municipality of Kastoria in the Region of Western Macedonia (Kallikratis Program). From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it belonged to the Municipality of Aliakmonos while before 1999 it belonged to the Municipality of Kastoria. It is located west of the city of Kastoria, at an altitude of 670 m. And at a distance of 7 km from it, on the road to Nestorio. According to the 2001 census, it had 704 inhabitants.

In 2001, a Neolithic prehistoric settlement was discovered near Kolokinthou.

Excavation history

The Neolithic settlement was located in the summer of 2001, east of the municipal district of Kolokinthou, during the opening of the vertical axis of the Egnatia Highway that connects Siatista with the border station of Krystallopigi, in the section Koromilia - Dispilio. Rescue excavations began in September 2001, following an operation by the Sixth Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, and excavations continued until February 2002. However, road excavations destroyed the entire 0.5 m archaeological layer. about, in the northern and western part of the archeological site. The excavations were stopped before the excavation of the site was completed, which was finally registered in order to continue the works of Egnatia Odos. [1]

Description

The ancient landfill is located above an old riverbed of the river Aliakmonas and was covered by, archaeologically sterile, a layer of clay 0.80 m thick. superstructure, reed prints can also be seen. Small stones, pottery fragments and pieces of uncooked or baked clay were used for the floor. [1] Other findings are [1]

sections of 25 clay figurines of various types
many tools made of gunpowder, such as blades, scrapers, small saws
scrap and cores, as by-products of the stone tool manufacturing process
many smoothed tools made of ophiolite and marble
vascular shells as well as bones, horns and other food debris.

The pottery found, for the most part, dates to the Late Neolithic period. The importance of the findings and the lack of research in the area contribute to the assessment that the settlement is very important. Located at a key point, it was adjacent to and directly related to the lake settlement of Dispilio. [1]
