Koklas (Κόκλας) Messinia
The village of Koklas (otherwise "Kokla" from the "khani tou Kokla") belongs to the Municipality of Oichalia, Messinia and is one of the largest villages in area and population of this Municipality. The permanent population is approximately 245 people.
In the past, the village of Koklas was nothing more than a deserted area, which included two inns for travelers. The village originated from Vidysova, today's Drosopigi. Because the northeastern area of the village of Kokla was a fertile area, which belonged to the residents of Drosopigi and which was 5 kilometers away from it, the residents of Drosopigi were forced to "migrate" and settled in the area where the village is located today. In Drosopigi, the church of Agios Dimitrios and the imposing stone spring that gushes gurgling water are preserved today.
The entrances to the village are located on the national road, while most of the houses are built along the main road, which connects one entrance (or exit) of the village with another. The central church of the village is the holy church of Saints Constantine and Helen, while there is also the secondary church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in the cemetery, where every August 15th the doxology of this great holiday is held. The old Primary School of the village today operates as a Cultural Center with rich folklore material, while the new one is not in operation and is used as a point of organization of the so-called "fairs" on the feast of Saint Demetrius (the central church of Drosopigi), Saints Constantine and Helen, as well as the two-day celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
