Kokkina (Κοκκίνα) Magnisia
Kokkina is a settlement in Thessaly in the Regional Unit of Magnisia.[2]
General information
Kokkina is located at the southeastern foothills of Mount Chalcodonio, at an altitude of 220 meters.[2] It is approximately 11 km. SW. from Velestino (seat of the municipality) and 32 km. W.-SW. from Volos. East of the village is Aerino, south is Perivlepto while to the northwest is the archaeological site of Kynos Kefales (see Battle of Kynos Kefales).
It is officially mentioned, after the Union of Thessaly, in 1883 with its old name from the Turkish occupation as Mousafakli in the Government Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883 to be annexed to the then municipality of Feron. In 1928, with the Government Gazette 156A - 08/08/1928, it was renamed Kokkina.[3] According to the Kallikrates program and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, together with Agios Dimitrios, Eleftherochori, Perivlepto and Kokkaleika form the community of Perivlepto[4] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Fera of the Municipality of Rigas Feraios and according to the 2011 census, 202 residents were registered.[5]
