Kentrochori (Κεντροχώρι ) Rethymno
Kentrochori (official: Kentrochorion, until 1933 Doumaergio[2] and Vouidomagergio) is a village and the seat of the homonymous community of the Municipality of Agios Vasileios, in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. It is 37.5 kilometres from Rethymno and is built at an altitude of 530 m. at the southern foot of Mount Kentros.[3]
Historical information
According to a local legend, during the Byzantine era, a noblewoman named Maria lived in the area, who owned a large area of land, from Mount Kentros to the sea in the south. For the cultivation of all this area, she had brought oxen and pairs of oxen. Both the houses of the herders and the stables of the oxen and other animals were located in the area of the present village, resulting in it being called Vuiomagergio, from the presence of the oxen and the cooks of the herders. The lady herself also built the nearby monastery of the Holy Spirit, where she remained a nun until her death.[3]
The earliest mention of the village is in a contract of 1301, which was drawn up by the notary of Candace. In this contract it is referred to as Vudomaierio. The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Vuidhomagiergio in the province of Agios Vasilios. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofilakas it is mentioned as Vuidhomargiergio with 60 inhabitants, while Vasilikata also mentions the village in 1630, under the name Vuidho Magiero. In the Ottoman census of 1659 it is mentioned as Vidu Mayeryo, with 20 houses.[3]
In the census of 1881 it is mentioned as Doumaergeio in the municipality of Agios Pnevmas and had a purely Christian population of 195 inhabitants. In the census of 1900 it had 246 inhabitants. In the census of 1920 it is mentioned as the seat of the homonymous rural municipality.[3] In 1925, Kentrochori was annexed to the community of Ardaktos, but in 1931 it was designated the seat of a community, which remained until the Kapodistrian administrative division, when the village was annexed to the Municipality of Lampi.[4]
