Kechrinia (Κεχρινιά) Aitoloakarnania

Kechrinia is a semi-mountainous village in the Regional Unit of Aitoloakarnania with an altitude of 380 meters [1].

Geography - History

Kechrinia is located on the slopes of Mount Petala (Thyamon), northeast of Lake Amvrakia at a distance of 14.5 km SE. from Amfilochia. It is a picturesque village with several old stone houses and alleys whose inhabitants are mainly engaged in animal husbandry. Since 2008, on the initiative of the Agricultural Cooperative "Union" of Agrinio, a modern dairy industry has been operating [3]. In the area there are important traces of habitation (castle ruins, tank, tombs) from the Mycenaean era. The village is visited by travelers Leon Henzey in his book "Mount Olympus and Acarnania" and Colonel William Martin Leake "Journey to Northern Greece" when they visited the area (around 1800) writing that they met in the area ruins of ancient houses. On Mount Petalas, just before the village from the entrance of Amfilochia, is the non-visitable cave "Pournaria" and on the way to the settlement of Kanalos the cave "Spirtouli" [4]. The area is known for the so-called "Wild Horses of Petala", which live freely in large herds and are considered to belong to a rare breed of the Pindos mountain range.

The ancient Belichriniassa

The ancient city of Belichriniassa is located southeast of the village towards the settlement of Kanalos. It is considered, according to some, to be one of the five cities of the ancient state of Amfilochia, while according to others it belonged to the ancient country of Agraia. Ancient castle walls, an ancient circular tank and several Mycenaean tombs have been found. The most important are at the site of the "Great Mountain", where a vaulted tomb dating to between 1400 and 1100 BC has been found. as well as those in works on the provincial road Kechrinia - Lepenou that it is probable that the cemetery of the ancient city must have been located there [4].

Administratively

It is officially reported in 1836 to be annexed to the then municipality of Amvrakia. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, the community of Kechrinia was established and the settlement was defined as its seat [7]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with the settlements of Makrychoria, Kompothekla, Kanalos, Agioi Theodoroi and Falangias, they constitute the Local Community of Kechrinia which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Amfilochia of the Municipality of Amfilochia and according to the 2011 census, settlement 488 [8].
