Kato Xechoro (Κάτω Ξέχωρο ) Thesprotia
Kato Xechoro (formerly Xechoro Zeinel) is a small Greek mountain village in the municipality of Filiates[1] in the region of Epirus (Kallikratis Plan).
General and historical information
It formerly belonged to the prefecture of Thesprotia, in the former province of Filiates. From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of a community of the municipality of Filiates. Since 1 January 2011, it has been the seat of the homonymous local community,[1] of six settlements, of the municipal unit of Filiates, of the homonymous Municipality. It is located NE. of Filiates, near Farmakovouni, in a valley. Its population, engaged in livestock farming and agriculture, in 1928 as a community numbered 444 residents and in 2001 it numbered 146 residents, while the village itself only 13 residents. Since 1928 there has been a primary school and a post office.
Ecclesiastically it belongs to the Metropolis of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga. The village's church is dedicated to Saint George,[2] hence the village is also called Ai Giorgis.
The businessman and local benefactor of Filiates and Corfu, Nikolaos Triantafyllou (1857-1949) was born in Kato Xechoro[3].
