Kato Elati (Κάτω Ελάτη) Trikala

Kato Elati is a settlement in Thessaly in the Trikala Regional Unit.[2][3]
Geographical - historical information

Kato Elati is located north of Portaikos and east of Mount Koziakas (Kerketio) at an altitude of 115 meters[2] while it is approximately 20 km. west of Trikala. Next to it and to the northeast is Meligos, to the northeast is Fotada and to the southeast is Ammoudia. The area next to the village was a swamp - marsh with crystal-white waters and this is why the old name of the village, during the Ottoman period, is Asprovaltos.[4] It was founded by residents of Elati (at an altitude of 860 m. in Koziakas) who were wood transporters and had their huts in the area in order to spend the night in them. In 1881, with the liberation of Trikala from the Turks, it was purchased from the Turkish Bey of the region, Meto Katsikis, whose estate extended from Valtino to Dialekto.[5]

Administrative - population data

It was officially listed as a separate settlement in 1920 with its old name Asprovaltos being annexed to the then community of Valtsino. In 1966, with the Government Gazette 26A - 09/02/1966, it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name and in 1976 with the Government Gazette 261A - 04/10/1976, it was renamed Kato Elati.[6] According to the Kallikratis program, together with Meligos and Ammoudia, they form the homonymous community[7] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Kallidendros of the Municipality of Trikala and according to the 2011 census, 142 residents were registered.[8] The population trend, according to the censuses is:
