Katafygio (Καταφύγιον) Karditsa
Katafygio[1] or Katafygi[2][3] is a settlement in Thessaly in the Regional Unit of Karditsa.
Geographical - Historical information
The Refuge is located southeast of Lake Plastira, approximately 22 km. SW. from Karditsa and at an altitude of 500 meters[4]. In the Kastri location there are "remains of an ancient fortified settlement probably from the 5th century BC and the Hellenistic period. Also, parts of the fortified acropolis of the settlement, terraces and walls of houses are preserved.[5]
Sights of the village are its square with its centuries-old plane trees, the "Agnanti" location very close to the settlement and the monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary of Petra,[2] in which a library and a secret school operated during the period of Turkish rule. It hosted great fighters of the 1821 Revolution while Saint Kosmas the Aetolian visited and admired it, in the middle of his second tour.[6]
Holy Monastery of Panagia Petra
To the northwest of the village, at a distance of 4 km and at an altitude of 600 meters is the Holy Monastery of Panagia Petra, with a possible date of construction in the year 1550. Its catholicon is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is a four-column church, with side choirs and a narthex on the west side. Of considerable interest is the Stavropegic chapel of the Metamorphosis of the Savior, with the Holy Altar in the style of late Romanesque times and the hagiographies of 1672 and 1789.[6]
The monastery and the chapel have been designated a historical monument.[7]
Administrative information
It is officially mentioned, after the union of Thessaly with Greece, written as Katafygi in 1883, to be annexed to the then municipality of Itamos. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, it was designated the seat of the homonymous newly established community.[8] According to the Kallikrates program and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, it is the community of Katafygio, which falls under the municipal unit of Itamos of the municipality of Karditsa.[9] According to the 2011 census, it has 154 residents [10] while in 1981 and 1991 it had 298 and 311 respectively [3].
