Katafygio (Καταφύγιον) Ikaria

Katafygi or Katafygio[2], Katafydi[3] for the locals, is a settlement in Ikaria and the Regional Unit of Ikaria.

Geographical - Historical information

Katafygi is located on the northeastern slopes of Mount Athera at an altitude of 400 meters[4]. It is approximately 7 km. N.-NE. from Agios Kirikos. The churches of Agios Dimitrios and Agia Triada in the center of the village are considered attractions.

Ancient residential remains and remains of an acropolis are preserved in the area, which date back to the Neolithic period.[5] It is believed that the area was the administrative center of the ancient Thermae, which flourished due to the intensive exploitation of its thermal baths, and the inhabitants took the name 'Asclepians' in the 3rd century, since they were under the protection of the god of medicine Asclepius.[6] A funerary or votive relief has been found, the work of the sculptor Platthi from Paros, which is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Agios Kirikos and dates to around 475 - 450 BC. It depicts "an imposing woman sitting on a throne holding a baby in her arms. A standing young boy leans on her knees, a smaller boy approaches on all fours and two standing men watch the scene gesturing".[7]

Administrative - Population data

It was officially mentioned as a separate settlement for the first time in 1918 with the Government Gazette 204A - 21/09/1918 specifying the seat in the then community of Katafygi.[8] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it belongs to the community of Agios Kirikos, which falls under the municipal unit of Agios Kirikos of the Municipality of Ikaria, and according to the 2011 census, 62 residents were registered.[9]
