Kastri (Καστρί) Evoia

Kastri (Geraistos) is a seaside settlement in Evoia[1] with a population of 37 residents, according to the 2011 census[2]. It is located 19 km southeast of Karystos and has a small port with little tourist traffic. Administratively, it falls under the Local Community of Platanistos of the Municipality of Karystos.[3] It is a small and isolated village that presents some little tourist and construction traffic due to the coastal zone in which it is located, while its natural harbor is one of the few places - in the wider area of Karystos - that is protected from northeastern and western winds.

Historical information

Kastri is one of the oldest settlements in the area of Kafireas (Cape Doros), and is even mentioned by Herodotus[4], Homer[5] as well as other ancient writers.

Its natural and sheltered harbor served as a shelter for ships since ancient times. It was called Geraistos and is associated with many historical events from the time of the Trojan War to the years of Justinian. In the harbor of Geraistos, Menelaus and Nestor found refuge with their companions returning from Troy, while in the area, Agesilaus, king of Sparta - and one of the greatest generals of ancient Greece - gathered an army of 8,000 against Artaxerxes in 396 BC.

However, the various raids it suffered from time to time, mainly from corsairs who plundered the Aegean regions during the 14th century, but also from ships that found shelter, resulted in the destruction of everything that reminded of the importance of this area.

Sights

The area of the ancient city of Geraistos has been declared archaeological since 2007 because "important antiquities are preserved, such as ancient public and private buildings, dating from prehistoric to medieval times".[6] The village beach extends circularly for 350 meters, having in parts sand, pebbles and small rocks while its bottom is sandy with occasional small rock formations and calm and serene waters.[7]
