Kamariotissa (Καμαριώτισσα) Samothraki
Kamariotissa is a town and port in Greece, on the island of Samothraki.[1][2]
Geographical and historical information
Kamariotissa is located on the west side of the island, near Cape Makryvrachos[1] at an altitude of 14 meters[3] above sea level and is approximately 5 km west of Chora. It owes its name to the icon of the Virgin Mary of Kamares, which is kept in the church of the same name. It is the largest port of Samothrace and at the same time the main road junction for the two sides of the island.[2]

Previously, the port of Paleopolis, about 6 kilometers northeast, was considered the most important port on the island, but it always fell victim to pirates and the forces of nature. Today, only an old, broken bridge remains. At the end of the 19th century, Kamariotissa had only a few hundred inhabitants, mainly fishermen and merchants. Due to its favorable location, more and more fishing boats anchored here in the then small harbor. In the following decades, the harbor (especially during the 1990s) was expanded to accommodate many boats and larger ships.
Administrative - population data
It is officially mentioned in 1928 in the Government Gazette 116A-28/05/1918 that a seat was annexed to the then community of Samothrace.[4] According to the plan, Kallikratis falls under the Municipality of Samothraki and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 1,069 inhabitants.[5] The population censuses after World War II are:
Census 1951 1961 1971 1981 1991 2001 2011
Population 176[6] 277[7] 336[8] 546[9] 719[10] 826[11] 1,069
