Kamaria (Καμάρια) Messinia
Kamaria[4] is a settlement near Methoni and is administratively part of the Municipality of Pylos - Nestor, in the Prefecture of Messinia.
Location
Kamaria is located southeast of Methoni, approximately 10 kilometers away, and northwest of Finikounda, approximately 4 kilometers away. It is located on the 13th Provincial Road Harakopi - Methoni,[5] at an altitude of 102[1] meters and is approximately 1 kilometer from the sea. Near Kamaria are Evangelismos, approximately 3 kilometers to the north, and Chounakia, approximately 4 kilometers to the northeast, respectively.
History
The village area has a long history that follows the history of Messinia and the wider region of both Methoni and Pylia. In antiquity, it was part of the kingdom of Nestor, ancient Pylos. The village has existed, at least since the early years of the establishment of the Greek State.
Administrative history
The village is mentioned, at least since 1844, as belonging to the old Municipality of Methoni, with a population of 21 inhabitants. The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Kamaria in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Methoni in the District of Pylia with a population of 17 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[6] The seat of the Municipality of Methoni at that time, based on the same source, was the town of Methoni. According to the 1879 census, the settlements of Kamaria and Grivitza (today Evangelismos), which were then enumerated together, had a total of 500 inhabitants.[7] Kamaria[8] was officially annexed in 1889,[9] to the old Municipality of Methoni,[10] with its seat in the homonymous settlement of Methoni and remained a settlement of the municipality of Methoni until 1912, when this municipality was abolished. In 1912[11] Kamaria was annexed to the Community of Grivitsa.[12] In the same community with headquarters in Grivitza (Evangelismos), the settlements of Agatziki (today Foiniki, remained until 1913 when it was annexed to the Community of Methoni), Giapapi (renamed Dendroulia in 1927, abolished in 1971, recognized again in 2001 as Dendroulia) and Kavouriano (abolished in 1928, recognized again in 2011) were also annexed in 1912, while in 1919 the settlement of Daouti was annexed to the Community of Grivitsa (recognized as Daouti in 1920). In 1927 the settlements of Grivitsa, Giapapi and Daouti were renamed to Evangelismos, Dendroulia and Perivolakia respectively, while the Community of Grivitsa was also renamed to the Community of Evangelismos. The village remained as a settlement of the Evangelismos Community, with the changes in the community names, from 1912 to 1997, when then, within the framework of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Kamaria was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Methoni,[13][14] until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Kamaria now belongs to the new Municipality of Pylos - Nestor.[15][16] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program by merging the pre-existing municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestor and Chiliochoria. Kamaria today is a settlement of the Community of Evangelismos of the Municipality of Pylos-Nestor,[4] which also includes the settlements of Amoulaki, Dentroulia, Evangelismos (headquarters), Kavouriano and Palialona.
Residents
The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 109 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural activities.
