Kalloni (Καλλονή) Aitoloakarnania

Kalloni is a mountain village in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. It is built at an altitude of 1,000 meters at the western end of Vardousia and is one of the most mountainous villages in Aitoloakarnania.

Geography - History

Kalloni is located in the SW at the foot of Mount Pyrgos (1,254 m.), On the provincial road that connects Elatovrysi with Grammeni Oxya and is 80 km away from Nafpaktos. The older location of the village was lower but its inhabitants moved at a higher point due to subsidence around 1893 [1]. The village is mentioned by its old name Strominiani or Stromiani in the Byzantine era, while the French traveler François Pouqueville names it in the list of villages in the Kravaron region inhabited by 30 families. Several villagers have settled in Messolonghi, where they have established a district called Kalloni.

Sights of Kalloni are the picturesque square with the age-old oak tree and views of the surrounding ravines, the parish church of Agia Paraskevi for which tradition says that in its place there was a monastery and the church of the Assumption where ancient tombs were found (the “ ληνότρυπις ”, meaning“ Greektrypes ”) and a tomb inscription with the phrase“ on the way to memory ”[1] [3].
