Kadi (Κάδι) Evoia

Kadi is a village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 189 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 210 m[2] on a small hill at the foot of the Kotylae Mountains.[3]

Historical information

The etymology of the name is unknown. According to one view, it comes from the kados, a container used to collect milk, as the village's economy is mainly livestock.[3] According to another view, a Turkish kadis (district chief) lived in the village and from this event the village took its name.[4] The village is mentioned in the Ottoman tax register of 1474 as Kazi. According to the register, it had 42 houses with 4 widows and was subject to the nahiye of Monodryos.[5]

In 1836 Kadi was annexed to the municipality of Konistria, in 1848 to the municipality of Kotyla, and with the abolition of municipalities in 1912 it was designated as the seat of a community which also included the village of Giannides. During the occupation, 30 Greeks were executed by the occupying forces in the precincts of the church of Saint Seraphim.[3]

In the center of the village is a Venetian fortified tower. The tower was built between the end of the 14th century and 1470, when Evia was conquered by the Ottoman Turks.[4]

A road starts from Kadi which goes up to Kotylaia, after first passing through a ravine. After five kilometers, the fir forest of Kadi begins.[3]
