Itea is a lowland village of Thrace in the Evros Regional Unit at an altitude of 30 meters[2].

Geography - History

Itea is located towards the border of Greece with Turkey, at a distance of 46 km. NE. of Alexandroupoli and 13 km. W.-NW. of the Kipi border station. It is between the settlements of Koila (W.), Trifylli (NE.), Peplos (E.-SE.), Ardani (SE.) and to the west of the village passes a stream of the same name. At the location "Three Huts" and on a densely vegetated hill, a cist tomb dating back to the Hellenistic period was excavated in the early 1970s. Near the village there are four ancient burial mounds, while at the "Pirovolika" site a treasure of silver tetradrachms of Ptolemy Sotiros has been found, which is kept in the Archaeological Museum of Alexandroupolis.[3]

Name - Administrative

Its old name, before the liberation, was Gemezi-Kioi or Osmandze (Turkish: Gemici)[4] while in 1924 it is officially referred to as Manthia in the Official Gazette 194A-14/08/1924 to be annexed to the then community of Trifylli. In 1955 with the Official Gazette 287A - 10/10/1955 it was renamed Itea.[5] According to the Kallikrates Plan, administratively, together with Trifylli, they form the municipal community of Trifylli, which belongs to the municipal unit of Feres of the Municipality of Alexandroupoli and according to the 2011 census has 105 residents[6].
