Chariessa, (Χαρίεσσα) Imathia

Chariessa,[1] previously known as Dolno Kopanovo (and Kato Kopanos[2]) is a village in Central Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Imathia. It is located in a fertile area irrigated by the Central Macedonia Regional Canal and is built at an altitude of 45 meters.[1] It is approximately 11 km east of Naoussa and 81 km west of Thessaloniki. It belongs to the Municipality of Heroic City of Naoussa.[2]

The village has about a thousand residents who are mainly engaged in agriculture. Approximately 1 km east of the village is the chapel of Zoodochos Pigi, built in the 16th century and repaired in 1924. 2 km west of the village are the Macedonian tombs of Lefkadia and the wider area of ancient Mieza. Ancient cist tombs were recently discovered very close to the village cemetery.

History

The village was probably founded in the 17th century, when the inhabitants of the neighboring settlement of Delimano[3] moved there. Hariessa has been known since the time of the Macedonian Struggle under the name Kato Kopanos. At that time, the lake of Giannitsa was nearby, where battles were fought between the Greeks and the Bulgarians. Nowadays, the lake has dried up and its place has been taken by several acres of fields, which are also exploited by the inhabitants of the village. The Arapitsa River passes through Hariessa, which originates from Naoussa and flows into Ditch 66, which in turn flows into Aliakmonas.
