Gavrolimni (Γαβρολίμνη) Aitoloakarnania

Gavrolimni is a village in the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania. It belongs to the municipality of Nafpaktia and the former province of Nafpaktia and according to the official data of the 2021 census, its population is 294 inhabitants.[1][2]

Location

Gavrolimni is built at an altitude of 100 meters[2] on a slope of the Kaliakouda hill between the mountains of Varasova and Klokova and the Evinos river. The Argalio stream passes near the settlement. Two kilometers north of the settlement is the Gavrolimni valley, which has dense vegetation consisting of pine trees, olive trees and cypresses.[3][4]

An important settlement of the Local Community of Gavrolimni is the Hania Gavrolimni, located on National Road 5 (Antirrio-Ioannina).
General and historical information

The Byzantine church of Panagia Panaxiotissa.

Previously, the settlement was built at a location 3 kilometers east of its current location, but it seems to have been destroyed in the early 1800s due to a battle between the troops of the Pasaliki of Ioannina and the men of the charioteer Loukas Kaliakoudas, who was killed during the clash.[3][5] In 1844, it was part of the municipality of Nafpaktos and according to the census data of that year it had a population of 170 inhabitants.[6]

Administratively, Gavrolimni belonged to the province of Nafpaktia until 1997. Later, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was subordinated to the municipality of Chalkia, while in 2010 it was included within the boundaries of the Chalkia municipal unit of the Kallikratiko municipality of Nafpaktia.[7]

Sights

Two kilometers from Gavrolimni is the Byzantine church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Panaxiotissa, which is a cross-shaped church with a dome and dates back to the late 10th - early 11th century. It is characterized as the best example of Byzantine church architecture, especially the tourlotos - cruciform (transitional) style, in the wider area of Nafpaktia.[2][8] Due to continuous siltation over the centuries, the temple is half a meter below the ground surface.[3] Other attractions include the village's old olive mill, which operated until 1960, and the remains of an ancient settlement at Marmara.[3]
