Galeniano (Γαλενιανόν) Heraklion

Galeniano is a village in the Archangelos community of the Minoa Pediada municipality, in the Heraklion Regional Unit of Crete. It is built at the foot of Mamouloukou hill.[2] It belonged to the Pediada District.

Historical information

On Mamouloukou hill, above the village, a peak sanctuary has been excavated by Nikos Panagiotakis.[2] The name of the village probably comes from the family that lived there. The oldest mention of the village dates back to 1670, under the name Galanyano.[3] In the 1881 census it is mentioned as Galaniano and had a purely Christian population, with 27 inhabitants. In the 1900 census it is mentioned as Galaniana, with 28 Christian inhabitants. In the 1920 census it had 27 inhabitants and was listed as Galeniano.[3]

In 1925 the village was initially annexed to the community of Kastelli Pediada and later the same year to the community of Varvaros, where it remained until 1997, when with the Kapodistrias program it was annexed to the municipality of Kastelli. With the Kallikratis program in 2010 it was annexed to the municipality of Minoa Pediada.[4]
