Galatas (Γαλατάς) Preveza
Galatas is a settlement in Epirus and the regional unit of Preveza.[1][2]
Geographical - historical data
Galatas is located towards the northern border with the Regional Unit of Ioannina, at the southern foothills of Mount Zarkorachi in the Thesprotian Mountains and at an altitude of 180 meters.[2] It is approximately 21 km. N.-N.W. from Filippiada and 49 km. N. from Preveza, while to the west the Xiropotamos River passes.
The village is mentioned from the period of Turkish rule and the late 18th century. It belonged to the Souliotiki Sympoltia, being one of the villages of the "Lamari" region that was destroyed by the Turk-Albanians during the years of the Souliots' struggles (1788 – 1803) along with the villages of Zerla, Mouziak, Sporati, and Verpeza. A notable religious sight and monument is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a three-aisled domed basilica from 1863, with a remarkable wooden carved iconostasis (from 1867) and the bell tower in the churchyard, a building from the same era.[3]
Administrative - population data
It is officially mentioned, after the liberation of Epirus, with the old name from the Turkish rule as Bulmeti, in 1919 in the Official Gazette 181A - 14/08/1919 as being annexed to the then community of Podogoras. In 1925 with the Official Gazette 54A - 06/03/1925 it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name and in 1927 with the Official Gazette 76A - 02/05/1927 it was renamed Galatas.[4] According to the "Kallikratis" Program and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, together with Agios Savvas and Zervos, they constitute the community of Galatas[5] which belongs to the municipal unit of Thesprotiko of the municipality of Ziros and according to the 2011 census has a population of 106 inhabitants[6].
