Gaia (Γάια) Evoia
Gaia is a village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 34 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 160 meters.[2]
Historical information
The village seems to have been created during the Byzantine period. It was previously called Gaia. The etymology of the name is unknown. It probably comes from the name of a Frankish timariou who owned the olive grove below the village, while according to another version it comes from the name of a Roman official named Gaius Markos. On the hill above the village, ruins of a Venetian tower survive.[3]
In 1836 it was annexed to the municipality of Kotylaioi. With the abolition of the municipality in 1912, it was annexed to the community of Vrysi, where it remained until the Kapodistrian administrative reform in 1997, when it was annexed to the municipality of Konistros. Today it belongs to the municipality of Kymi - Aliveri.[4]
