    The Byzantine years
The Byzantine Church of the Entrances

In the area of today's village it was recently found that the ancient city of Pantomatrion was located, whose name is preserved in the river. In ancient times, probably during the Byzantine period, in the place of Skotini, Lubinies or in the Mansions there was a village with another name, as evidenced by the ruins of old buildings. Today's church of the Entrances was built in the eastern part in the place of an older church, cruciform, inscribed with a dome and three aisles, in the shape of a basilica of the 11th or 12th century. There are various sculptures and also a plaque depicting a beast. All this belongs to the early Christian basilica. Today's church was built at the expense of Archbishop Michael (Melissinos) Melissourgos and his wife, Irene, in 1323 (see "The Chrysovoulos of Komnenos and the 12 Archontopoulos"). It was recorded, but the frescoes are not preserved.

    Name and inventories

Today's village was built at a later time and took its name from the surname of the first settler (Fodele), who refers to Crete in the 13th century. In the list that accompanies the treaty of Alexios Kalergis and Venice (1299) the relevant reference is made [1]. In the census of Kastrofylakas in 1583 it is listed with 129 inhabitants [2] and belonged to the province of Mylopotamos. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it belonged to the province of Mylopotamos.

    Relationship with Domenikos Theotokopoulos

The village was associated with the great painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos. The preservation of the surname Theotokakis in the village led to the conclusion that El Greco came from there and in fact that he was born there [3]. According to A. Kyrou, it is believed that the house of the old mansions of Theotokopoulos was located in the old settlement of Skotini. However, Prevelakis and others contradict this claim, referring to his origin from Heraklion. This view was reinforced by the announcement of K. Mertziou at the 1st Cretaceous Congress (1961). Also, in Kastrofylakas (K 36) it is mentioned that the artist's brother, Manousos, was a land tenant in Chandakas. However, it is not ruled out that El Greco's father was born in Fodele and then came to Chandaka. Based on the view of Theodokopoulou's origin from Fodele, professors and students at the University of Valladolid in Spain, in 1934, built a special column with an inscription in Greek and Spanish, on a plate from the rock of Toledo, where the great painter lived and died. 4].
