Filyra (Φιλύρα) Trikala
Filyra is a village in Trikala, in the Municipality of Pyli.[1][2] It is 5 kilometres (3 mi) from the town of Pyli and 20 from the town of Trikala and its permanent population (2021 census) is 325.[3] inhabitants.
Geomorphological characteristics
It is located at the foot of Mount Koziakas at an altitude of 180 metres (590 ft).[4] The terrain is mostly semi-mountainous, with clear plains and mountainous areas. The fauna of the area includes roe deer, deer and bears that live in a forest full of chestnut trees, oaks, plane trees and firs. Various springs exist in locations inside and outside the village.
Historical information
The village was called Lesiana [5] until 1963 from the Byzantine era, with the first mention in a chrysoboul issued by Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos in 1336. The name is taken from the Slavic and means forest (les). Ali Pasha and later his son Velis governed the area during the Turkish occupation, encroaching on the lands. When Thessaly was liberated in 1881, the community was incorporated into the municipality of Pialeia, while in 1914 it gained administrative autonomy.
Social information
The residents are mainly engaged in agriculture, livestock farming and less in trade. The main agricultural products of the area are corn, cotton, beans, watermelons and vegetables. In the last twenty years, a great development of pig farms has been observed, which has resulted in the stay of many young people in the village and the emergence of the village as the main supplier of pork in the Prefecture. The cultural association is very active, which with the help of the library and the folklore museum contributes to the dissemination of local culture.
