Eleonas (Ελεών) Voiotia

Eleon or Eleonas is a village in Voiotia and is a homonymous local community belonging to the Municipality of Thebes, following the implementation of the Kallikratis Plan. Its population is 1,010, according to the 2011 Census. On the eastern border of Eleonas is a Detention Center for Drug Addicts, which, since 2008, has been adjacent to the relocated Korydallos Women's Prison.

Etymology

The name of the village comes from the swamps that existed in the area in antiquity, which is why it is written with "e" and not with "ai" (Eleonas), as is often mistakenly mentioned. Until 1955 it was called Spades [1] [2].

History
The ancient city

The ancient settlement of Eleonas was located near the area of today's village. Homer mentions it as one of the Boeotian cities that took part in the Trojan War.

Demography

The village's population has been on the rise since the 1960s, but has been declining in recent years - due to internal migration and declining birth rates - with the primary school becoming two-seater again, as it used to be. In fact, it has been preserved more by the families of immigrants (mainly Albanians, Romanians) who are permanently settled in the village and contribute to the renewal of the aging population. There are also several young immigrants from Pakistan and India who work seasonally in agriculture. Before the arrival of immigrants in the seasonal agricultural work, they worked mainly in Rome, where they settled with bags in the surroundings, or locals.

Economy

The economy of the village is mainly based on agriculture and less on livestock. Potatoes, onions, watermelons, cotton, olives, etc. are mainly cultivated. For several years, the inhabitants were also engaged in the cultivation of tobacco brought by refugees from Asia Minor who had settled in the area. With the creation of an industrial zone in the area, many abandoned tobacco cultivation and worked as factory workers. While those who had a large lot of money continued to deal with agriculture.

Education

In the village there is a Primary School and a Kindergarten.

Sport

The most popular sport in Eleonas is football. AES ELEONAS, a team from the village, played in the 2nd Division in the 2013-14 season. The village stadium is named after George Katsifis, in honor of Lt. Georgios Katsifis. The lieutenant, who was from Eleonas, was killed on December 15, 1982 in the area of Agios Ioannis Apideas, Laconia, as a result of the crash of the F-4E aircraft of the 338th Bombing Squadron of the 117th Fighter Wing (Andravistida), during which he was commander-in-chief. , co-governed by Lieutenant Colonel Salvara Lambro.
