Eleftherio (Ελευθέριο) Larissa

Eleftherio (formerly Karalar [1]: plural of the Turkish word Kara = black [2]) is a village belonging to the municipality of Killerer, of the Larissa Regional Unit, located in the Region of Thessaly, according to the administrative division of Greece, as formed by the "Kallikratis" program. Its population is 347 inhabitants.
General and historical data

The altitude of Eleftherios is 60 meters above sea level. In the village there is a kindergarten and a primary school. The church of the Nativity of the Virgin is located in the square and every year on its feast it becomes a festival.

Until 1918 the settlement was known as Karalar. On September 23, 1943, the male population of the village, aged 15-50, was executed en masse by the German Occupation Troops in retaliation for the guerrillas' attack on cut-off soldiers. The death toll is estimated at more than 40. [4] [6] [40] On June 29, 1944, ELAS forces attacked the German garrison based in Eleftherios. Although the Germans repulsed the attack, the next day they left the village for good. It is also reported that on August 9, 1944, 9 other residents of the village were executed.

Administratively, after its incorporation into the Greek state, the settlement was subjugated in 1883 in the municipality of Sykouri [1]. In 1912 it was annexed to the Topuslar community [1] and from 1918 to 1997 it belonged to the province of Larissa [3] as the seat of the community [1]. In 1997 it became part of the municipality of Platykampos [3], while since 2011 it belongs to the Kilikler municipality.
