Dorizas (Δόριζας) Arkadia

Dorizas is a settlement in the Municipal Unit of Valtetsi. It belongs to the municipality of Tripolis of the Regional Unit of Arkadia, located in the Peloponnese Region, according to the administrative division of Greece as established by the “Kallikratis” program. The official name is “Dorizas”[2] but the name “i Doriza” or “i Ntoriza” is also used. According to the 2021 census, the population of the settlement is 86 inhabitants.

The settlement

Dorizas is located 13 kilometers SW. of Tripolis at a distance of 1 kilometer from the national road connecting Tripolis with Megalopolis. It has an altitude of 740 meters above sea level[3].

During the administrative division of Greece with the "Kapodistrias" plan, until 2010, Dorizas belonged to the Doriza Local District, of the former Municipality of Valtetsi in the Prefecture of Arkadia.

The old primary school, which is no longer in operation, houses the village's Cultural Center[4], where events and exhibitions are occasionally organized. The traditional village festival is of Agios Panteleimonas and is organized immediately after the harvest in Doriza on 26 and 27 July[5].

The waters from the springs of the area between Doriza, Manari and Kato Aseas form the upper reaches of the Alfeios River.

Historical background

The toponym comes from a proper name, as economies with the same name are found in various parts of Greece, Albania and Italy, while it is also found as a toponym in the above places[6]. It is believed to be connected to a mercenary named Dorisa or Doriza[7][8][9] of the Stradioti mercenary corps used by the Serene Republic of Venice. These armed and mounted mercenaries came from the Balkans, Italy and other countries and provided related services from the 15th to the 17th century. The Venetian administration granted them land and other privileges.

In the census of the Pronoite of the Serene Republic of Venice in the Venetian-held Peloponnese, Francesco Grimani, of the year 1700, the village belongs to the province of Leontario, is mentioned under the name Dorissa and has 29 families and 114 inhabitants[10].

The Dorizians participated in the Revolution of 1821 and in all the wars of the nation and in the anti-fascist struggles. From the beginning of the 20th century, they began to emigrate mainly to the USA[11][12]. After the end of the civil war, immigration intensified to the USA, Canada and Australia, while there was also internal immigration to Athens and elsewhere, resulting in a significant reduction in the population.

Today, the residents are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Sights

An impressively large oak tree behind the sanctuary of the church of John the Baptist[13][14] has been declared a protected natural monument, a remarkable remnant of a significant oak forest, which was burned in 1826 by Ibrahim's troops. The church of John the Baptist itself dates back to before 1699[15].

A short distance from the junction for Doriza, on the old national road, a stone-built historic inn, which belonged by inheritance to the large Talaganai family from Doriza, was preserved in relatively good condition until 1998. King Otto and his entourage stayed, rested and ate at the Talaganai inn during their first official trip to the Peloponnese in 1833[16].

People

Konstantinos Konstantopoulos, a prominent lawyer and Prime Minister of Greece in 1892, was born here.

Yannis Zevgos (real name Yannis Talaganis) was born here (1897 - 1947), a teacher, journalist, historian and senior official of the KKE and EAM, having served as Minister of Agriculture in the first post-occupation universal government of George Papandreou.

The painter[17] and architect Dimitris Talaganis, son of the activist Yannis Zevgos, was born here.[18]
