Dendrochori (Δενδροχώρι) Trikala

Dendrochori is a settlement in Thessaly and the Trikala Regional Unit.[2]

General information

Dendrochori is located east of Mount Koziakas at an altitude of 120 meters[3] and approximately 14 km. W. from Trikala. To the northwest is Prinos, to the northeast is the Pinios River, to the southeast is Valtino, to the south is Eleftherochori. Its name came from four huge oak trees or "dendra" (for the locals) that were located around its only church at the time. The Dendrochori Cultural and Educational Association "to Themelio" is active in the village.[4] In March 2023, the new Cultural Center of the Holy Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was inaugurated.[5]

Historical information

The village is mentioned since the period of the Ottoman rule under the name Paparantza which means an area with swamps and rich woody vegetation. According to local tradition, it is said that most of its inhabitants, at that time, dispersed to the surrounding mountainous areas to avoid the savagery of the Turk-Albanian beys, who were the only owners of the area. These beys, in order not to leave their fields uncultivated, transferred Arvanitika populations from Gjirokastër etc. who, together with those who did not leave, are the ancestors of today's Dendrochori.[6]

The written references that exist are:

in the 18th - 19th century, in the Great Meteoron, on Folio 23a with the type of the toponym Paparantza, with 2 dedicators, while
in the 215th prothesis of the Monastery of Varlaam, which is written from 1613/1614 to the 19th century, on folio 9 it is mentioned with the type of the toponym Paparantza, with the names of 4 dedicators.
as well as Paparantza with 8 houses during the registration of the vilayet of Trikki and Stagi on September 29, 1820.

Administrative - population data

It is mentioned, after the Union of Thessaly, in 1883, in Government Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883, with its old name Paparantza, being annexed to the municipality of Pialia and in 1912, with Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. In 1927, with Government Gazette 306A - 22/12/1927, it was renamed Dendrochori.[7] According to the Kallikratis program, together with Exalofos and Matsoukiotika, they constitute the homonymous community[8] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Kallidendros of the Municipality of Trikala and according to the 2011 census, 532 inhabitants were registered[9].
