History
The name comes from the surname of the settler, the Daratsos family, a noble family from Chania.[2] During the 1821 Revolution, the Cretan-Turkish-inhabited Daratsos became a battlefield between Greek revolutionaries and Ottoman forces[3]. The settlement is mentioned in the Egyptian census of 1834 as Darazús.
In 1881, it was part of the municipality of Perivolia and had a population of 328 inhabitants, of whom 174 were Greek and the remaining 154 Cretan-Turkish[2][4]. In 1894, according to an estimate by the Greek army officer Nikostratos Kalomenopoulos, the village was inhabited by 37 Greek families and ten Turkish families[5]. On the contrary, in 1900, during the census of the Cretan State, the majority of the population was Cretan-Turkish[6].
In 1920 it was referred to as Daratsos with a population of 260. Administratively it belonged to the Municipality of Chania[2] where it remained until 1936 when it was annexed to the community of Galatas, while in 1943 it became the seat of the community of Daratsos. In 1991 the settlements of Kato Daratsos and Makry Toichos[7] were annexed to Daratsos.
