Damavolos or Damavolou is a village and the seat of the homonymous community of the Municipality of Mylopotamos in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. It is located 33 km east of Rethymno, at an altitude of 250 m.[1] The village has been declared a traditional settlement of Greece.
Historical data
Stergios Spanakis states that the fact that the name of the village is mentioned in the old censuses in the general is an indication that it comes from the surname of the first settler. The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Dhamavolu. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofilakas it is mentioned as Damavolo with 100 inhabitants and by Francesco Basilicata in 1630 as Damavolu. In the Ottoman census of 1671 it is mentioned as Damavolo, with 30 haratsia.[1] In 1881 it belonged to the municipality of Avdanites and according to the census it had 153 Christians and 31 Turkish residents. In the 1900 census it had 184 residents.[1]
In 1925, Damavolos was included in the community of Agios Mamatos, but in 1927 it was designated as the seat of the community of Damavolos, which remained until the Kapodistrian administrative division in 1997, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Kouloukonas. In 1969, the settlement of Agios Syllas was annexed to Damavolos.[2]
