Dafni (Δάφνη) Lasithi
Dafni is a village in the municipality of Siteia, in eastern Crete. According to the 2021 census, it has 61 inhabitants. It is 28 kilometers from Siteia, on the road to Stavrochori. The name comes from the plant of the same name. In the village square there is a plane tree and a fountain. The village's economy is agricultural.[2]
Historical information
The village is mentioned in 1577 by the census of Francis Barocci as Dhafni. In the census of the Castrofilakas in 1583, Dafni is listed with 187 inhabitants. Francesco Basilicata also mentions it as Dafni in 1630. In the Ottoman census of 1671 it is mentioned as Dafni with 28 tax payers. In the Egyptian census of 1834, it had 4 Christian and 15 Muslim families, and in the 1881 census, Dafni had 24 Christian and 267 Muslim residents.[3] The Muslims of Dafni were known for their ferocity against Christians. In 1897, the Christians finally besieged them in the mosque and then killed 150 Muslims and killed another 30 who had escaped to a cave on Mount Koprokephala.[4]
In the 1900 census, Dafni had 59 Christian and two Muslim residents. In the 1920 census, it had 128 residents.[3] In 1925 it was initially included in the community of Roukakas, but later that same year it was included in the community of Kryon, where it remained until 1997, when with the Kapodistrias program it was included in the municipality of Sitia.[5]
