Chora (Χώρα) Arkadia

Chora is a semi-mountainous village in the municipal unit of Tropaea, in the municipality of Gortynia. It is located northwest of Tripoli, near the Ladonas River, at an altitude of 436 meters.[4] It is 110 km from Tripoli. It has a land area of 19 km2. It is located 5 km from the Tripoli-Olympia-Pyrgos road north of the Ladonas River, with a detour 2 km after Toumbitsi.[5]

General information

The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and livestock farming. The landscape is green with pines, cypresses, native plants and olive tree crops. The church of the village is the Church of Saint Athanasius, which belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Gortynos and Megalopolis. Near the village is the well-known monastery of Timia Zoni. The village is the seat of the homonymous community. The community also includes the settlements of Dodecametro and Elaia.

Historical information

It is the oldest village of the former municipality of Thelpousis. It was the seat of the municipality from its foundation until 1855 and from 1870 until 1912 when the municipality of Thelpousis was abolished.[6] The village appears in the Venetian archives in 1698 under the name Tsakoneioi Chora and later in the early 18th century under the current name Chora. According to researchers, Tsakoneios was a military garrison during the Byzantine period. The village has 23 families in the 1698 census and 30 families in the 1815 census by Pouqueville. Chora contributed to the revolution of 1821, most famously the fighter Athanasios Bramos. A black page for the village is the execution of Greek patriots by the Nazi army during the German occupation in the village church.[7]
