Chelidona (Χελιδών) Evros

Chelidona is a semi-mountainous village in the Evros regional unit at an altitude of 180 meters.[1]

Geography - History

Chelidona is located in northern Evros, towards the border line of Greece with Bulgaria and is 30.5 km. west of Orestiada.

In a location north of the village and between the villages of Mikri Doxipara (N.) and Zoni (W.), there is a tumulus - a mound with a diameter of 60 meters and a height of 7.5 that was constructed gradually, at the beginning of the 2nd century. on a natural hill, so that the mound would be visible from afar and was located on the road that connected Adrianople with Philippopolis. In it, after cremation, four members of a wealthy landowner family were buried, along with their grave goods, five carriages that transported them to the tomb area, their pack animals and five more horses[2]. The area has been declared an archaeological site since 2011 under the name of the Tomb of Mikri Doxipara - Zoni[3].

When Saint Cosmas the Aetolian passed through Thrace (1763 - 1773), it is likely that he taught in the area and at the point where the homonymous chapel outside the village is located today.[4]

According to research conducted by Gazi University in Turkey, a map from 1530 shows the village of Chelidona with the old Turkish name Halvadji.
Name - Administrative

Before the liberation it was referred to as ''Halvatzi''"[5]. It was officially referred to as Chelidon in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A-14/08/1924 to be annexed to the then community of Zoni[6]. According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Mikri Doxipara and Chelidona, it forms the local community of Zoni, which belongs to the municipal unit of Kyprinos of the municipality of Orestiada and according to the 2011 census has a population of 90 residents[7].
