Charokopos (Χαροκόπος) Evoia
Charokopos is an uninhabited semi-mountainous village in central Evoia and the Regional Unit of Evoia.[1]
General information
Charokopos is located at the northeastern foothills of the Kotylae Mountains at an altitude of 232 meters[2]. It is approximately 7 km W. from Kymi, 35 km N.-NE. from Aliveri (seat of the municipality - via Avlonari) and 79 km NE. from Chalkida. Its old name is Harokopi and this is how it is reported, after the Revolution of 1821 and the incorporation of Evia, in 1835 it was annexed to the then municipality of Kotylae, while its name was corrected in 1912 with the Government Gazette 245A - 16/08/1912.[3]
In July 1897, the lignite mine of KO.SELIK. was inaugurated in the area for the exploitation of the lignite deposits of Kymi and most of its workers lived in the village. Its houses have an interesting architecture, they are built of stone and their roofs are covered with slabs.[4]
According to the Kallikratis program, together with Vitala and Kampos, they form the local community of Vitala, which falls under the municipal unit of Kymi of the municipality of Kymi - Aliveri and according to the 2011 census, it has no permanent residents[5].
