Designation

There are two versions of the origin of the name. According to the first, the name comes from the words sand and elocheno, while according to the second, it comes from the Molocha plant, which is abundant in the area. From the first version the writing Amolochos is supported while from the second the writing Amolochos. [1]

Historical data

The village was the largest in northern Andros during the Turkish occupation. After the liberation of Greece, it remained the largest village in the region and was initially the seat of the local municipality established in northern Andros, the municipality of Gavrio. In the following years the population of the village decreased as a large part of the population moved to the coastal areas. In the period 1912-1998, Ammolochos was the seat of a separate community. [2] With the implementation of the Kapodistrias program, in 1999, it joined the municipality of Idrousa, while with the implementation of the Kallikratis program, in 2011, it joined the municipality of Andros.
