Agia Foteini or Agia Fotini is a village in the Apostoloi Community of Amari and the seat of the Municipality of Amari, in the Rethymno Regional Unit of Crete. According to the 2021 census, it has 104 inhabitants.
General information
Agia Foteini is built at an altitude of 500 meters, 33 km southeast of the city of Rethymno[1]. It was inhabited during the 1950s[2] and was recognized as a settlement in 1961, while according to the census data carried out that year, it had 12 inhabitants[3]. Until 1997, it was a settlement of the Apostoloi community of the Amari district. Later, within the framework of the Kapodistrian administrative division, it served as the seat of the Municipality of Sivritos. Since 2011, after the new administrative restructuring of the Kallikratis project, it has been part of the municipality of Amari as a settlement of the Apostoloi community of the Sivritou municipal unit[4].
The central church of the village is dedicated to Agia Foteini (hence its name) and is built on the site of an older church of the same name, which according to tradition was built by Saint Nikon the Repentant[2]. Ecclesiastically, the settlement is served by the parish of Agioi Apostoli, which falls under the 2nd Archdiocese of the Holy Metropolis of Lambi, Sivritou and Sfakia. A health center has been operating in Agia Fotini since 1989.[5]
