Kato Karyofyto (Κάτω Καρυόφυτο) Xanthi
Kato Karyofyto is a mountainous village in Thrace in the Regional Unit of Xanthi[1], which was declared a traditional settlement in 1976.[2]
Geography - History
Kato Karyofyto is located on the southern slopes of the Western Rhodopes at an altitude of 501 meters[3], southeast of the peak "Ermario" or "Rocks of Ambar Kaya" (altitude 1,441 meters)[4] and is 40 km northwest of Xanthi. The village is considered a refugee village because, after the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the population exchange of 1923, its Muslim inhabitants moved to Turkey while refugees from Eastern Thrace and Trebizond (10 families) came and settled in the area.[5][6] Together with the neighboring Ano Karyofyto and the wider area (Livaditi, Kalyva, Dasos Haidous) they are a tourist destination for this reason and have several hotel accommodations, guesthouses and restaurants.
Sights
The single-arch stone bridge in the southern part of the village has been classified as a newer monument "because it is a peculiar folk construction that is so harmoniously tied to the imposing landscape that it seems like an extension of it and is a living testimony to the commercial movement and economic development in this region of the Balkans".[7] The height of its arch is 7 meters and its length is 9.50 meters, it dates back to 1813 and is preserved in good condition.[5]
The old watermill, owned by the Municipality of Stavroupoli, located in the stream southeast of the village (location "Platania"), which "is a remarkable example of a pre-industrial building dating back to the early 19th century and played an important role in the economic development of the area" along with
the adjacent rural residence, which "is a representative example of a residence, as it was formed in the mountainous area of Xanthi Prefecture and composes, together with the windmill, a remarkable and functional unit". The two buildings have been designated as historically preserved monuments.[8]

Administratively
During the period of Turkish rule, the two settlements (the present-day Ano and Kato) were referred to as Kozloutsa, which belonged from 1878 to 1912 to the vilayet of Adrianople, to the sanjak of Giumoultzina (Komotini) and to the kaza of Xanthi.[9] It was also referred to with the same name after the liberation of Thrace in 1919 in the Government Gazette 251A - 20/11/1919 to designate it as the seat of the homonymous community, while in 1928 with the Government Gazette 193A - 20/09/1928 it was renamed Karyofyton. In 1940 the settlement was abolished[10] and divided into Ano Karyofyton and Kato Karyofyton.[11] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Ano Karyofyto, Kastanitis and Livaditis, they constitute the local community of Karyofyto, which falls under the municipal unit of Stavroupoli in the Municipality of Xanthi, and according to the 2011 census, 48 residents were registered.[12]
