Portuguese cartography of the 15th and 16th century reflects a vision of the world unattained until then. Having sailed along the coasts of almost every continent and every island the Portuguese were able to apprehend its outline in a much more accurate manner. The maps designed by Portuguese cartographers enjoyed international acclaim for they were endowed with great rigor, resulting from careful observations and the systematic registering of geographical information. They therefore exerted a great influence on the cartography of other countries.
